What are Dumbwaiters?
Dumbwaiters are small, self-operated elevator
systems that handle small loads, such as food, documents,
and supplies, up and down a building. Unlike passenger elevators,
which would emphasize comfort and safety for the human user, dumbwaiters
are concerned primarily with the efficient movement of goods and materials
from one level of structure to another.
They come in different configurations, ranging from the traditional cable-driven
type to the more modern electric dumbwaiters. Their primary application includes
light-item vertical movement in commercial buildings, health care facilities,
restaurants, and residential homes
Although dumbwaiters are non-passenger elevators, they still have a good number of
safety features against accidents and provide reliable operation. They can also
be fitted with automatic doors, load sensors, and emergency stop buttons.
